An iconic, modern classic in the Rolex portfolio, the Milgauss is a pioneering anti-magnetic watch designed to meet the demands of engineers and scientists. Created in 1956, it can withstand magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. Hence its name, “mille”, which is French for one thousand.
The Rolex Milgauss, like all of Rolex’s sports line-up, is based on their famous and ubiquitous oyster perpetual case. This is the same case design used in the Submariner or in the Explorer models, however, the Rolex Milgauss is done in a polished 904L steel with a polished smooth bezel that gives it a unique character amongst the other members of the Rolex family of sport watches. On the back of the Rolex Milgauss, there are markings for the model, the brand, and Oyster case.
Inside the Rolex Milgauss is the in-house Rolex 3131 movement, that while hidden from view, is superbly accurate and sparsely decorated. The power reserve is 48 hours and the 3131 movement can also be wound manually by unscrewing the non-protected large but flat crown. There is no date on the Rolex Milgauss since any cu tout on the dial would interfere with the operation of the Faraday cage.
But perhaps the most iconic visible aspects of this watch are the seconds hand, the orange lightning bolt that really stands out against the black dial and the the uniquely coloured green crystal which changes in its intensity depending of the angle you view the watch.
